**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always leaned towards introversion, diving headfirst into this experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, trials, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assert that it was a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For countless incoming students, this is a primary concern about embarking on their university journey, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I remained hidden in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I am thrilled to say I’ve established some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have become my second family during my time at Imperial, all originating from simple, casual chats with others who shared my feelings.

What did I take away from this experience? Making that first move to engage with others is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or comfortable right away, that’s okay—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a broad spectrum of individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the increase in workload and the greater complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year—don’t shy away from requesting assistance from your classmates and the faculty.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and tutors genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year and are always willing to tackle any concerns.

I didn’t leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be priceless. Whether through official capacities or casual exchanges, building rapport with the staff is one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit.

My most significant piece of advice? Utilize the support that’s being provided. There’s no such thing as too much help, and asking for it should never feel like a burden.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There is a vast array of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve learned that I am never isolated in this journey, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with instances of happiness and fun.

Looking back, I take pride in how much I’ve grown. The start of university may appear as a leap into uncertainty, but it’s a leap that is undoubtedly worthwhile.
