### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and innumerable unforgettable experiences. So, what insights do I have, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have evolved into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university.

So, what did I discover? Taking that initial step is essential. Even if you feel hesitant or uneasy at first, there will be numerous social events and chances to meet others. And, above all, just stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was yet another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was a marked change, and the transition from the first term to the second term was even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe peers studying and apparently thriving. However, a realization that aided me was understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, chances are, others are too.

The primary lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or academic staff, requesting support is one of the most vital skills to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They truly desire students to thrive and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered various forms of support. Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Fully utilize the available support systems—you can never have excessive assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxious feelings I experienced before and during university were unjustified. With the abundant support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to harmonize stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, it’s illustrated that growth often arises from stepping beyond your comfort zone.
