### Reflecting on My First Year: Insights Gained in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Jumping into this new phase was a formidable undertaking for someone like myself, who had been naturally shy and introverted. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable experiences, I can truly recognize the progress I’ve made. So, what insights has this year provided, and how do I feel today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary concern, and I was no different. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I discovered a second family, commencing with light conversations and engaging with those who were experiencing similar feelings. What lesson did I glean? Taking that initial leap of faith at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker activities and avenues to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. In such a varied student community, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.

#### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and the rise in content complexity. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more significant. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence in such a rigorous environment, particularly when it appeared that others were handling the pressure better than I was.

What supported me through those moments of uncertainty was the realization that everyone was in a similar situation. If I didn’t grasp a concept, there was a good chance others were grappling with it too. The critical lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for support is one of the most vital skills to cultivate during your first year.

#### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for their students to succeed and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication with us and demonstrated understanding for our challenges.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and now I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a leap by serving as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never receive too much assistance.

#### Final Thoughts
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to—and even during—my university journey was often misplaced. With the extensive array of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment, leading to personal growth in ways I had never anticipated.

To any incoming students reading this: embrace the difficulties, take those bold steps, and remember that you’re not in this alone. University is a period for development, and with the proper attitude and support, you will flourish.
