**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown appeared quite overwhelming. However, in hindsight, my first year has evolved into a remarkable journey—one rich in personal development, hurdles, and enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
A key challenge that loomed large was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might weigh heavily on your mind too. On my first day at student housing, just prior to term commencement, I found myself retreating into my room for the whole day, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I am proud to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t happen instantaneously; rather, they blossomed through gradual steps—initiating light conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. Over time, I discovered a second family at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Be bold and take that leap early. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or out of your comfort zone, don’t fret—there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, remain authentic. With such a varied community among your peers and throughout the university, you are sure to meet those who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university courses was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. This atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe peers who appear to have everything under control.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your initial year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the personnel within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication with us and demonstrated understanding toward our difficulties.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, but I wish I had initiated this process earlier. One proactive step I took early on was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize all the support and resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the vast array of support available from both staff and fellow students, there is always someone available to assist you. I’ve learned that I am never truly on my own and have figured out how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and fun.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been one of evolution, resilience, and connection. If you are about to embark on your university journey, rest assured that feeling anxious is entirely normal—just as it is to know that you will establish your path, forge meaningful bonds, and flourish in ways you never expected.
