**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase appeared quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I find myself thinking about the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
Making friendships was one of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, right before the term commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever encountered.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to venture out of my comfort zone and initiate small talk with others who were experiencing the same feelings. Over time, those initial chats grew into substantial friendships. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with that first courageous step.
So, what did I take away? First, making that initial move is always worthwhile, even when it feels daunting. If you’re not ready to dive right in, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others all year long. Second, simply be yourself. In such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Tackling Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the new workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What proved most beneficial was the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or the faculty. Learning to ask for help has probably been the most crucial skill I honed during my first year.
### The Encouraging Staff
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to offer support.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a leap by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal engagements, getting to know the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My biggest lesson? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—there’s no limit to how much help you can receive!
### Lessons Gained
Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the abundant support available from both faculty and peers, I came to realize I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been one of tremendous growth. It has highlighted the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone, reaching out for assistance, and seizing the opportunities presented to me. If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, understand that it’s normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you possess the ability to flourish.
