By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was preparing to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. However, I can now confidently say that I have made some of the most amazing friends during my time here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with brief conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of introductory events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered the importance of being true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals within the program and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your personality.

Another obstacle I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant jump from A-level studies, and in some respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even greater. Being in such a challenging environment can test your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you are confused about something, it is very likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and instructors!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and continually communicate about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and this is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support accessible from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
