Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and for prospective students, it might be a major worry. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day confined to my room, daunted by the prospect of stepping outside and mingling. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with others who were facing the same circumstances. So, what did I find out? I discovered that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also grasped that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the heavy workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find yourself confused about something, I can almost assure you that others are in a similar situation. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep ongoing communication with us regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps beforeāI took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to build connections with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much!
All in all, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both pre-university and during, are often baseless and can be eased by the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite stress factors like exams and deadlines.
