Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might occupy a significant place in your worries. On the very first day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the most cherished friendships of my life at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean? I realized that taking a plunge at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also came to understand that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to encounter others like you.
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me manage that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same predicament. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also do not grasp it. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students may face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to better connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!
On a broader scale, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated through the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to relish my experiences alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
