By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently considered one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I confined myself to my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that it’s important to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking events to aid in connecting with others. Moreover, be true to yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals at the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even steeper shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence; you might feel less competent when compared to peers. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from my first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep communication lines open throughout the academic year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often misplaced and can be alleviated with the support from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated and has taught me how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
