**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the cusp of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone previously shy and introverted, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich in growth, challenges, and enjoyable moments, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve developed and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I faced at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might feel similar nerves. On my first day at student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I secluded myself in my room for the entire day, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve created some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
What aided me? Taking that first step of faith. Engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally unsure made a significant impact. If you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret. There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. The essential takeaway? Stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and the significant leap in difficulty from A-levels was yet another challenge. The shift from the first to the second term proved particularly tough. It can be easy to feel swamped and doubt your abilities when observing others study with confidence. Yet, one thing I’ve discovered is that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too.
The key lesson here? Don’t hold back from seeking help. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for assistance is vital.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department has been nothing short of amazing. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I made the brave choice to become a year well-being representative, which offered me the chance to establish connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can enhance your university experience tremendously. My suggestion? Fully leverage the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I look back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt prior to entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the multitude of support accessible from staff and peers, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. I also figured out how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while incorporating moments of joy and relaxation.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, resilience, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university experience, remember to take those leaps of faith, seek help when necessary, and seize the opportunities to be your authentic self.
