By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was just about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into uncharted territory wasn’t something my former shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and loads of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary anxieties. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, as I sit here now, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from engaging in light conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be your authentic self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in navigating that mindset, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for support from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had discovered it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

Ultimately, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and demonstrated how to enjoy myself while managing the pressures associated with exams and deadlines.
