Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student perusing this, it may pose a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day of settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships I have ever had, here at this university and within this program. I have stumbled upon a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gather from this experience? I learned that taking a bold step at the outset of the year is always the best approach. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter individuals like yourself.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel out of place. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something doesn’t click for you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This may very well be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They resonate with students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I did not utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish relationships with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be eased by the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
