Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Now looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most terrifying elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in akin circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, be true to yourself. With such a vast array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They sympathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had made use of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support offered. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
