Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a major worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assuredly state that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those facing similar circumstances. What have I learned? It’s advantageous to leap at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There are plenty of ice-breakers and events to assist you in making connections. Additionally, if you can embody one trait, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a progression from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may feel less competent compared to your peers. A few strategies facilitated my journey through this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something unclear, it’s likely that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to both classmates and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show compassion and maintain ongoing dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had started earlier. I referred to taking leaps – I took one by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your benefit! My primary takeaway is to seize the support that’s available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
