Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most overwhelming obstacles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your chief worries. On my first day settling into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is optimal. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter peers like you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares a similar experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others in the same predicament. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff within Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to triumph and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with us and sustain ongoing communication about our issues throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had pursued it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My principal lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the vast array of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has shown me how to appreciate myself alongside stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
