Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my former shy and reserved nature was familiar with. In hindsight, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your major apprehensions. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? I realized that it’s important to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you interact with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of content. The transition from A-levels was definitely pronounced, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second felt even larger. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors supported me through those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If you are confused about something, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who share that confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I referenced taking chances earlier – I took a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to build relationships with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key insight from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the diverse support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amid sources of stress like exams and deadlines.
