Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re encountering this as a future student, it might be a concern for you. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and greet anyone. Sitting here today, I am pleased to share that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. There’s a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university; you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be a strain on your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel as though you fall short. A few strategies assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experiences. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire during your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They resonate with students and sustain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to build connections with staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of help!
Generally, this year has illuminated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are predominantly unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
