Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more formidable aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university; you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also find it confusing. So, seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking bold steps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are generally baseless and can be mitigated by the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
