By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may rank among your top concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one trait, be yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and difficulty of content. There was definitely a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me through that emotion, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication about our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy myself alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
