Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is usually one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your top concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most amazing friends here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With the diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and sustain open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellness representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with academic staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
