Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too scared to go out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s most beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to oneself is essential. With such a diverse community across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the workload and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What helped me was recalling that everyone is dealing with similar issues. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Request help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had capitalized on it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support systems from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
