Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted nature was prepared for. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university life, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your foremost concerns. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too scared to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all stemmed from striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate engagement with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you’re bound to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to tackle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might notice others studying and feel inadequate by comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to understand a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are also confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They express empathy towards students and ensure consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I initially mentioned taking risks – I did take a risk at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly among the most advantageous moves you can make for yourself! My key lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me to the fact that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated through the abundant support options supplied by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
