Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I realize that this year has been rich with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained during this time, and what is my situation now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more fearsome facets of commencing university, and if you are a future student reading this, it might be at the top of your concerns. On my first day moving into my housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day holed up in my room, too apprehensive to step out and greet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always a wise move. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there is one thing to be, it is yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels and, in many respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can often shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the knowledge that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Request support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance you’re offered. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both anticipated and experienced during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never on my own, and it has taught me how to have fun even alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
