Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university can be particularly daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve found some of the finest friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversation with others who were in the same boat. So, what did I learn? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I discovered that if you can be one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, a more substantial transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you are confused about something, I can almost assure you there are others who are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your freshman year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the outset; I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance that’s available to you. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
