Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my undergraduate journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year impart, and what position do I find myself in now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be a noteworthy concern. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. As of today, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I found that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. Moreover, I learned that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find those who vibe with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels and, in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be a challenge for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me mitigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same thing. So, seek out assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the freshman year. Rely on your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and appreciate the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making bold moves previously – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the diverse support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
