Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others don’t comprehend it either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are incredible. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year concluded, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which holds immense value. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s unequivocally one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much help!

Ultimately, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the ample support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s illustrated that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
