Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously quiet and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the primary and most frightening hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is often the most intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be your greatest worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, both at this institution and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with people experiencing the same situation. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With an array of diverse individuals across the course and campus, you’re destined to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They resonate with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking bold steps earlier – I initiated one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provisions made available by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never solitary and how to enjoy life regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
