By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I commenced my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of joy. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be overwhelming when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might pose a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I have formed some of the finest friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. The lesson? It’s beneficial to take initiative at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t stress! There are plenty of ice-breaker activities to help foster connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and even more from the first to the second term. This environment can test your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, others probably are too. So, seek assistance. This is essential during your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!

The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They engage with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I took a bold step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to liaise with staff, which is priceless. There are multiple avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has illuminated that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unwarranted and can be eased by the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
