By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself into the unknown was not exactly what my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating challenges of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may rank among your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, several days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to emerge and greet others. However, today, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals facing similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being thrown into such a scenario can be challenging for your self-esteem; observing others study may lead to feelings of inadequacy. A few strategies supported me through this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly assure you that others are also grappling with it. So, do ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students may find it challenging. They relate to our experiences and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the opportunity to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this component of university is to capitalize on the available assistance. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even in the face of pressures like exams and deadlines.
