Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not typical for my previously shy and introverted self. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This surely ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your significant worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Plenty of ice-breaker chances and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s authentic. There’s a vast array of individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to conquer was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the awareness that everyone is navigating the same journey as you. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are several others who feel the same. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I earlier mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to embrace the assistance that is being provided. You can never have too much!

In broad terms, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
