Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was in store. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Daring to plunge into the unknown wasn’t exactly what my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize that this academic year has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing obstacles I faced was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed at the idea of venturing out to greet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from striking up some light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, relax! There will be numerous icebreaker opportunities and events available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should embody, it’s authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to overcome was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment may not always be conducive to boosting your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies supported me through that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone else is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are equally bewildered. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the struggles students face. They show compassion towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the year’s onset when I accepted the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, an immensely valuable opportunity. There are plenty of avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this specific aspect of university is to embrace the resources you’re being offered. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it’s guided me on how to enjoy my time amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
