Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment! But what have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was socializing. This often stands as one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your greatest concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse crowd at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your self-assurance; you may witness others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, chances are others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students confront. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing it earlier. I took a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year revealed to me that anxious feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the available support from staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
