Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be your greatest apprehension. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to anyone. Sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was a definite increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me navigate through this feeling, one being the recognition that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost guarantee others share that sentiment. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I alluded to taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are mostly unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
