Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was socializing. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s essential to take that initial leap at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you engage with others. Moreover, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse community across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in this type of environment can impact your self-confidence; you might feel less competent compared to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are puzzled too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson from the first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make use of the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be lessened by the support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst the pressure of exams and deadlines.
