Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I got ready to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a future student, this might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase compared to A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If something isn’t clear, there are likely others who are confused as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your classmates and instructors!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain steady communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke about taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to take full advantage of the resources available to you. You can never have too much support!
On the whole, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings leading up to and throughout university are often baseless and can be eased with the help provided by staff and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
