**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unknown was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can assert with confidence that it’s been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Overcoming the Fear of Making Friends
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. The start of university can feel daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be concerned about it as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent several hours sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.

What shifted? It was all initiated through casual conversations and connecting with others who shared similar experiences. My most important lesson? Make that first move at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t think you’re prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect. And above all, just be yourself. With the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Tackling the Academic Transition
Adjusting to the academic workload and intensity was yet another substantial challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills, especially when you observe others appearing to thrive.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or your instructors. Learning to request help is arguably the most valuable skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely care about the success of the students and are sympathetic to the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and offered numerous resources for support.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Stepping into the position of year well-being representative felt like a significant leap, but it ultimately turned out to be one of the most enriching choices I made. It enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors can make a tremendous difference. My suggestion? Fully leverage the available support networks—you can never receive too much help!

### Lessons Learned
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge. Those pre-university jitters and fears? They were predominantly unfounded. With the abundance of support—from faculty to fellow students—I came to realize I was never truly alone. I also figured out how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-discovery, personal growth, and meaningful connections. If you’re about to start a similar journey, remember that while the challenges may appear daunting, the rewards are incredibly fulfilling. Take the leap, reach out for support, and fully embrace this experience—you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
