Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year filled with self-development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more formidable aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student perusing this, it could be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone else. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worth it. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also lost. So, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek support from your peers as well as the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps before – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role afforded me the opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support that’s available. There’s no such thing as too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
