Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting when beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I remained in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to go out and socialize. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? It’s most beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, be authentic. With an array of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be taxing on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Ask for help from both classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and uphold consistent communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are several avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much of it!
This year has broadly enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
