**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Reflecting now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the challenge of making connections. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

The individuals I’ve met here have become like an extended family. It simply required stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others experiencing the same situation. What have I discovered? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you’re not yet prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Facing the Academic Trials
Another notable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What helped me navigate these periods was recognizing that everyone is dealing with similar hurdles. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others share that sentiment. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff
On the topic of support, the staff members in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had made use of it earlier. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and making those connections can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Fully leverage the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has shown me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still seizing moments of joy and fun.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure, know that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. But also understand that you will evolve, adapt, and discover your place. Take those leaps of faith, seek help, and above all, be yourself.
