**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always maintained a shy and introverted demeanor, immersing myself into the vibrant environment of university life felt incredibly intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments, I realize just how much knowledge I’ve acquired and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share similar anxieties about connecting with new faces. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—people who have become like family to me.
What was the key to my success? Taking that first step of courage. Even if you feel unprepared to plunge into social gatherings, there are countless ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. I learned that the most effective approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you are sure to find those who align with your interests and ideals.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic pressures of university represented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second introduced even more trials. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competence when observing others appearing to excel. Nonetheless, I grasped a vital lesson: everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are, too.
The secret to overcoming this? Seek assistance. Whether from your fellow students or the teaching faculty, reaching out for help can significantly impact your experience. Learning to ask for support was arguably the most useful skill I cultivated during my first year.
### Establishing Connections with Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are fabulous. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we face. Throughout the academic year, they stayed communicative and offered a wealth of resources to help us manage academic and personal obstacles.
Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had explored it sooner. One of the most positive choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. Whether through structured roles or informal conversations, getting to know the staff is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My greatest lesson? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has highlighted that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to and during my time at university was often misplaced. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I was never truly on my own. I’ve mastered the art of balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments, and my self-confidence has blossomed throughout the journey.
To anyone on the brink of starting their own university adventure: embrace the obstacles, lean into the support surrounding you, and don’t hesitate to take that leap forward. You may just astonish yourself with your capabilities.
