**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might relate. On my first day at the student residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have wished for.
The breakthrough occurred when I opted to take a small step and engage in casual conversations with fellow students who were in similar situations. Over time, these dialogues flourished into significant friendships, and I genuinely feel like I have found a second family here at Imperial.
What did I discover? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect. And most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re managing to keep up.
What supported me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The key is to seek help. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking assistance, whether from peers or teaching staff.
### Encouragement from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They uphold open lines of communication throughout the academic year and are always prepared to address our inquiries.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a challenge for me, but it became one of the finest decisions I made. It facilitated the development of connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly rewarding. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I highly encourage making the most of these opportunities. Keep in mind, you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has made me realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout my stay—was largely unnecessary. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Reflecting on the past year, I see a period of growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You can do this!
