**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an individual who has always been somewhat introverted, venturing into unfamiliar territory was quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of significant change—brimming with personal growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the task of forging friendships. The commencement of university can appear overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely an issue you’re concerned about as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly acknowledge that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life here—connections that feel like an extended family.
What propelled me to this success? Taking that first bold step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to engage with others. I’ve also discovered that the best approach is merely to be genuine. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university life was considerable, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more profound. It’s easy to start doubting yourself when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. However, the reality is simple: everyone is grappling with the same issues. If you find a topic challenging, it’s likely that others are in the same situation.
The solution to this is uncomplicated—seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out is one of the essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors truly care about your success and understand the hurdles that students encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year, ensuring students receive the support they need.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it turned out to be a remarkable choice. It allowed me to build rapport with faculty members, which proved tremendously helpful. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and I strongly encourage you to make the most of these opportunities. The support provided exists for a purpose—utilize it!
### Insights Gained
This year has affirmed that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to manage pressures such as exams and deadlines while also making time for enjoyment and fun.
Looking back, I recognize the magnitude of my growth, and I look forward to the future with excitement. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take that leap, confront the challenges head-on, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You can do this!
