**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, taking the plunge into such a significant transition was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate just how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Confronting the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student, this may be something that worries you as well. On my first day of moving into accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
These connections, which feel like a second family, were developed through small actions—like initiating conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same things as I was. What I’ve discovered is that taking an initial step of courage early on is crucial. If you’re not ready right away, don’t panic! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter people who share your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the demands and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the progression from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is going through similar experiences. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was to seek help. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff, reaching out for assistance can significantly impact your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One positive step I took in the beginning was becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My major takeaway here is to utilize the resources and support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Overall, this year has shown me that the nerves and apprehensions I experienced before and during university were largely unwarranted. With the multitude of support options available—from staff to fellow students—there’s always assistance when needed. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize how far I’ve come, and I’m eager for what the future has to offer. To anyone about to commence their own university journey: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and remember to savor the journey!
