**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, plunging into the unknown was daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of transformation—filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of forging friendships. For many freshmen, this is a primary concern upon entering university. I can clearly remember my first day in the dorms. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly claim I’ve built some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me.

What was the key to this transformation? Taking that initial courageous step. Even if you feel unprepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect await you. I also learned that being authentically yourself is paramount. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the material was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level study was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others who seem to have everything sorted.

What assisted me during this time was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to ask for support is arguably the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

One of the most notable highlights of my experience has been the remarkable backing from the Materials department staff. They genuinely want students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open dialogue with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing it earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year was another brave step I embraced early on, which turned out to be tremendously fulfilling. It allowed me to build connections with staff members, which was invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I understand that the butterflies I felt—both prior to and during my university experience—were often unnecessary. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has imparted lessons on how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and happiness.

As I gear up for the next segment of my university journey, I am appreciative of the challenges, the growth, and the friendships I have cultivated throughout this adventure. If you’re about to embark on your own university experience, keep this in mind: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. You’re more than capable!
