**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and self-doubt as I started my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t what my introverted and quiet nature was used to. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal growth, trials, and abundant happiness, I can’t help but think about the lessons I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely this is a concern you share. I recall my first day moving into my accommodation—days before the term officially commenced. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who were equally anxious.

So, what did I glean from this experience? First, take that jump early on. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Secondly, simply be yourself. In a community as diverse as Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when you see others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What benefited me greatly was recognizing that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are as well. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and expressed compassion for our challenges.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but in hindsight, I wish I had reached out sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made a move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly impact your university experience.

My main takeaway? Make the most of the support resources provided to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral support, or merely someone to converse with, you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both before beginning university and throughout my time here—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support accessible from staff and peers, I’ve learned that I am never truly on my own. I’ve also identified how to juggle the stress of exams and assignments with moments of joy and fun.

Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, and I’m eager for what the future holds. To anyone gearing up to commence their own university adventure: take the plunge, seize the challenges, and remember that support is always available.
