**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a journey that was filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty. I was about to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the unknown was daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich in growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained—not only intellectually, but also personally.

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of entering university was forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On the first day in my student accommodation, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These relationships didn’t develop instantaneously, but started with small gestures—like engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing the same nerves. Gradually, these bonds turned into what I now consider a second family. My key takeaway? Take that initial risk early on. Even if you’re hesitant or uncomfortable, there will be plenty of icebreaker events and opportunities to connect. And above all, be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic workload was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others seemingly thriving. However, one thing that supported me was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping concepts, chances are others are too.

The solution? Reach out for assistance. This is possibly the most crucial skill I honed during my first year. Whether it’s connecting with peers or seeking advice from faculty, asking for help can significantly alter your experience.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, one of the highlights of my time here has been the remarkable support from the Materials department. The staff genuinely aim for student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they ensured open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the initiatives I undertook early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to foster relationships with staff that proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, becoming acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best actions you can take for your development. My suggestion? Utilize the support options available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has made me realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and during my first term—was often unfounded. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, growth, and forming connections. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember: take that plunge, seek help when needed, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.
