**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into unfamiliar territory felt incredibly daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year marked by personal development, challenges, and lasting memories, I recognize just how much I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of entering university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be feeling the same way. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days before the term began, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—relationships that genuinely feel like a second family.
What was the game-changer? Taking that first step. Engaging in conversations with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was proved to be the solution. If you’re feeling apprehensive, rest assured—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and occasions to meet others. Most importantly, just remain true to yourself. With the diverse array of people at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Adjusting to the academic workload and complexity of university-level material was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you measure up.
What aided me was understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. This was perhaps the most crucial lesson I grasped during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been phenomenal. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered various forms of help.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support resources until the latter part of the year, I wish I had started sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the year’s onset, and it became a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the assistance and resources available—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support options offered by both staff and fellow students, I always felt accompanied. I’ve learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
University is a period of development, and while the challenges may seem formidable at first, they also serve as chances to learn and flourish. If I could impart one piece of advice to my past self, it would be this: take the plunge, embrace the experience, and don’t hesitate to ask for help along the journey.
