Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to go outside and meet new people. However, today I can assert confidently that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a few casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t be alarmed! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in several respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They are sympathetic toward us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
