Around ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it could be among your greatest concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever formed, here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, which all began with a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to aid in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embrace any quality, it should be authenticity. With so many diverse individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity and difficulty of the workload. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation as you. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can virtually guarantee that there are several others who also share that confusion. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking chances at the start; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided to you. You can never have too much support!
On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated by the wide range of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun alongside stress-inducing elements like exams and deadlines.
