Twelve months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and joy! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into residence, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by initiating casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the subject matter. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something unclear, I can nearly assure you others are confused too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They wish for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate and consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness about university are typically unfounded and can be mitigated with the support from faculty and peers. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
